 We are moving 5,000 miles away from home. There is bound to be frustrations but this morning I feel a bit incensed.

According to NATO SOFA rules and regulations, I cannot be gainfully employed in Italy in any capacity that isn't on the military base. That means I can't teach or tutor online. I can't work in the Port of Naples for a cruise company. I'm not even supposed to have an Etsy shop or Ebay store. 🛑🙅‍♀️🚫 

We are waiting for the official "orders" to arrive from the Navy. Without orders we can't get our official passports. Without the red passports we can't get our Italian visas. Without visas they can't book plane tickets. Everything depends on those orders.

August is a month of vacation in Italy and apparently most of the HR department in Naples are Italian nationals so they are on vacation this month. They are the ones who issue the orders to get this ball rolling. 

RIDDLE ME THIS: why can Italian nationals work on base, in positions that I wouldn't mind working, but I can't work for Carnival Cruises off base or teach online?!

Even typing that I feel like an imperialist colonial jerk. I just needed to get it out there. This process is a rollercoaster indeed.

 Welcome to what I hope will be a chronicle of our many adventures! The impetus for this blog is our pending move to Italy for a few years. In summer 2021, the Alaska tour industry was still shutdown so we decided to check a few states off our list that we would not normally visit. While posting about our Southern Roadtrip, our niece Jamie, enthusiastically said I should blog about our adventures. A year late, and a few adventures since, I figured I'd give it a go! I feel like travel has been a part of my identity forever. With Dad working in the airline industry, the idea of getting on airplanes and venturing to new places has always been a part of my life. They funded multiple school trips oversees and have always encouraged me to step out and see the world. Insurance Nightmares Know No Borders

The American healthcare system is broken. This isn't news to anyone that has paid into a health insurance system for years to only be declined for a legitimate claim. Maybe it was a bureaucratic "check the box" rejection. Maybe you didn't have the right rider. Maybe your doctor put a code in that was off by one digit. Maybe the insurance adjuster had deemed your medically advised procedure as "unnecessary."  I had my fair share of medical frustration state side. There was the neurologist who told me that "your headaches are in your head because you're too overweight and curling doesn't count as an exercise." (Brilliant diagnostic work there: my headaches are in my head🙄). My school district medical insurance stopped covering chiropractic care "because clearly it isn't helping and is wasting yours and our money because you keep getting migraines and going back."
